The Pārbati Stage II Hydroelectric Project (800 MW) is located in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh about 260 km from Chandigarh. The nearest rail head is at Kiratpur, which is 192 kilometers away. The project consists of a 85 meters high concrete gravity dam across river Pārbati just downstream of the confluence of Pārbati River and Tosh Nallah, 31.52 kilometers long 6 meters diameter Head Race Runnel, two pressure shafts of diameter 3.5 meters, length 2,150 meters and 2,133 meters including 1,546 meters inclined portion in each shaft and surface Power House containing four Pelton Turbines Generating units of 200 MW each.
CALTROP provided oversight and refurbishments made to the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), including PLC and VFD ($2.5 million). Services included advising the client on correct forms of tunnel support for both the TBM and Drill and Blast (D&B) drives. We assisted the contractor on alterations to the TBM for increased productivity and assisted to achieve a successful grouting program, which will include high pressure injection (150 bar plus).
Duties included foam injection and staged grouting techniques along with advising on compiling a grouting and to minimize potential claims. We also provided monthly reporting documentation to the client, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, Ltd. (NHPC) Board of Directors.
