The Bayshore Bikeway Segment 7 and 8A is a 1.8 mile portion of a designated 24-mile bike route around the San Diego Bay. Already considered one of the top bikeways in the nation, significant improvements were made to the Bayshore Bikeway in 2012, including Segment 7 and 8A, a new Class 1 facility located in the southeastern corner of the bay in the City of Chula Vista. The overall Bayshore Bikeway connects to numerous destinations as it passes through the cities of San Diego, National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado. The length and location of the Bikeway, in conjunction with the land uses adjacent to it, encourages use of the facility for commuters, as well as recreational cyclists.
Segments 7 and 8A, in particular, are located in an industrial area of the bay where bicyclists were often in conflict with cars, trucks and trains. The $1.2 million project had a number of challenges to overcome, including special treatments for railroad crossings, expansive soils, areas prone to flooding, historic resources and endangered species.
CALTROP provided inspection and construction administration services for this project.
